FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions Questions

Is SQL Server enabled by Azure Arc free?

Connecting SQL Server to Azure Arc is free. However, additional services such as Microsoft Defender for SQL, PAYG licensing, and Azure Monitor are charged with their own pricing model. In the PAYG model, you only pay a monthly fee per active core.

What is the difference between PAYG licensing and traditional licensing?

With traditional licensing, you pay upfront for an annual or perpetual license. In the PAYG (Pay-As-You-Go) model, you pay monthly based on the number of cores you use, without any down payment. The cost automatically adjusts as you scale up or down your workload.

Do I need to move my existing SQL Server to Azure?

No. SQL Server enabled by Azure Arc manages SQL Server on-site on your existing server. Just install the Azure Arc agent and you gain access to management, security and monitoring services from the Azure portal. Your data remains in its current location.

What is ESU (Extended Security Updates)?

These are extended security updates for discontinued SQL Server versions (2012, 2014). When you connect your SQL Server with Azure Arc, you can automatically receive ESU updates. In this way, security vulnerabilities in old versions continue to be closed.
